Rosalie David talk on Ancient Egyptian Jewellery: What Was Its Purpose?

This lecture will explore various reasons – religious, social, economic and political – why jewellery was so indispensable to the ancient Egyptians. The lecture will also look at the sources from which the Egyptians obtained the materials used in jewellery-making, and will demonstrate some of the trends that developed over the millennia.

Welcome to the new MAES season! We kick off on Monday 14th September with Dr. Campbell Price revealing Art, Sex and Death in Graeco-Roman Egypt.  More on that later!

Our lectures will be held online via Zoom until December 2020. Lectures from January onwards will either be at our venue (Pendulum Hotel) or online – tbc.

Online lectures are free to members so why not join us! Just complete the membership form here and we will look forward to “seeing” you on 14th!

In light of the coronavirus outbreak and the movement restrictions imposed by the government, we’ve had to cancel our April meeting, unfortunately. We’ll make a decision on the May and June meetings nearer the time. We hope to be able to reschedule postponed lectures at a future date.

Join us on Saturday 21st March for an exciting study day with Dylan Bickerstaffe, Kenneth Griffen & Sarah Griffiths, focussing on the powerful royal women of the New Kingdom, including Ahmose Nefertari, Hatshepsut, Neferure, Nefertiti, Nefertari and the Harem Conspiracy against Ramesses III.

The study day will take place at the Longfield Suite, Prestwich M25 1AY. Tickets cost £40 for MAES members, £45 for non-members, and £35 for students.

This Monday – we welcome Janet McWilliam who will be discussing Ramesses III and the Battle of the Delta!

Towards the end of the late Bronze Age Ramesses was faced with a mass migration of people from the northern and western Mediterranean. Inscriptions at his mortuary temple at Medinet Habu tell the tale of one of these battles. In this talk I look at the reasons behind the migration and how the battle played out.

Our next meeting will be on Monday 10th February, when our very own Professor Rosalie David will talk to us about the latest discoveries that have been made about Takabuti, the famous mummy at the Belfast Museum, in what’s sure to be an interesting lecture.

Rosalie David OBE has achieved world renown for her pioneering work in investigating mummies using non-destructive techniques and became Director of the KNH Centre for Biological and Forensic Studies in Egyptology at The University of Manchester. Her research work into the Schistosomiasis disease has been recognised with a prestigious award from the Anglo-French Medical Society and she was awarded an OBE in recognition of her services in Egyptology.
